Zululand yacht sails for the city

The Lipton Challenge Cup is an offshore race that dates back to 1909

AFTER a total refit and rebranding, the Zululand Yacht Club’s entry for this year’s prestigious Lipton Challenge Cup was relaunched last Friday.

Previously known as ‘Esmeralda’, the sleek L26 class yacht now proudly bears the name ‘Spirit of uMhlathuze’, striving to bring fame to both the club and the city.

‘This is a big moment for us,’ ZLYC Commodore Wayne Bird said at the unveiling ceremony.

The yacht will be crewed by young locals under skipper Brian Martin, who grew up in Richards Bay and was crowned Junior SA champion three times while representing ZLYC.
