Richards Bay cops flex muscles

SCORES of police poured into crime hot spots in the Richards Bay CBD early on Friday morning in a show of force that netted significant results.

Tagged ‘Operation Fiela’, the show of force saw uniformed members of the Zululand, King Cetshwayo and Umkhanyakude clusters striking early at known vice hangouts at Whoonga Park, Taxi City and the Alpha building, before heading off to Meerensee and Alkantstrand.

This was followed by a roadblock at Brackenham.

Well received by crime-sickened members of the public who voiced their appreciation at the sight of the men and women in blue, the operation under the command of Col Bonga Mkhwanazi and Col Zanele Buthelezi took many potential lawbreakers off the streets.

Despite the early hour, no fewer than 50 suspects were arrested for drunkenness and loitering, while four were charged with possession of drugs.

Eight illegal immigrants were detained in the CBD, while another was uncovered at the roadblock, where three road traffic arrests were also made.

SAPS leadership promised many more such raids, both in the daytime and at night.
