WATCH: Minor drama at Port of Richards Bay

Sea conditions were fortunately extremely favourable, with little swell and wind

THERE was minor drama at the Port of Richards Bay on Saturday morning when an outgoing vessel apparently suffered mechanical or electrical failure.

The MV Berge Rosa left the coal terminal berth shortly after 9am and dense yellow smoke was seen coming from her funnel.

This continued for a few minutes and two TNPA tugs were soon at her side to escort the vessel down the channel.

A third tug joined in and the ship was taken to the outer anchorage with the local marine pilot still on board – an indication of concern in the light of previous incidents.

Sea conditions were fortunately extremely favourable, with little swell and wind, and the departure proceeded without a hitch.
