Teen drowns at Mtunzini Beach

Search continues after 19-year-old goes missing at Mtunzini beach

Search operations are ongoing for the 19 year old who drowned at Mtunzini Beach yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

Norman Rautenbach, Richards Bay station commander at the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), says duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning.

“On arrival on the scene, we found local community members, friends and family, and local boaters using a private aerial drone, a rigid hull inflatable boat and a jet-ski, searching for a 19 year old from the Eastern Cape, who had gone missing in the surf zone while swimming,” said Rautenbach.

He said it appeared the teenager was swimming with his girlfriend. When she got out of the water; she noticed he was in difficulty, appearing to be caught in rip currents, and disappearing in the surf zone.

“An extensive air, sea and shoreline search has revealed no signs of the missing teenager,” added Rautenbach.

“Police K9 Search and Rescue are continuing in ongoing search efforts. Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing teenager during this difficult time.”

Police have opened an investigation, and the KZN surf rescue network was alerted.

Responding to the incident were the NSRI, SAPS, Mtunzini CPF, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers and IPSS Medical Rescue.
