WATCH: TB campaign targets students

Stop TB campaign reveals South Africa among top 3 countries globally in terms of TB mortality

If we want a healthy and economically productive country, we need to invest in our young people.

This sentiment was expressed by national Department of Health youth manager, Gertrude Mbalati, during the Stop TB campaign programme held at uMfolozi TVET College’s eSikhaleni campus today (Thursday).

Mbalati emphasised that young people are the future of the country, saying the college was targeted not as a once-off campaign, but as part of ongoing efforts to ensure students understand that tuberculosis (TB) does not only affect older people, but also young people.

“We’re here to instil a culture where young people take responsibility for their own lives and lead by example among other young people who may be ill-informed,” said Mbalati.

Mbalati revealed that South Africa is among the top three countries in the world in terms of TB-related mortality, with KZN recording some of the highest numbers of cases in the country.
