Army spoils party for Manguzi booze smugglers

When the two drivers realised the army was approaching, they jumped out of their vehicles and fled, leaving their bakkies behind

MANGUZI police are looking for two suspects who abandoned their bakkies laden with booze and escaped into the bush near the Kosi Bay border on Monday morning.

Police received a tip-off about the consignment of alcohol expected to arrive in the Mahlungulu area, a known location used by criminals to smuggle illegal goods into the country.

Since the area is only patrolled by the army, the police alerted them about the planned delivery.

A source said the suspects had ordered the alcohol from Mozambican providers.

uMkhanyakude police cluster spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, said two bakkies full of booze were recovered.

‘When the two drivers realised the army was approaching, they jumped out of the vehicles and fled, leaving their bakkies behind.

‘Both vehicles and loads of liquor were confiscated,’ said Mdletshe.
