One killed as taxi plunges into Mfolozi River

According to police reports, the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle which went off a bridge and into the river below

A 33-year-old man tragically lost his life on Christmas morning when the taxi in which he was travelling, plunged into the Mfolozi River.

According to police reports, the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle which went off a bridge and into the river below.


The incident occurred at about 2am, in the Ulundi policing area.

Empangeni Search and Rescue, K9 Search and Rescue, and K9 Search and Rescue Durban were called to the scene on Christmas Day after one taxi passenger was unaccounted for.

The search and rescue teams patrolled the river on SAPS inflatable rafts, searching embankments and all areas along the river where the victim may have been.

The intensive search saw members navigate numerous rapids and search 4km of the river before the body was found in a rocky area of the river.

The victim was loaded onto a raft and floated 1km where the search and rescue members met with local SAPS and handed over the body.
