WATCH: Richards Bay hippo shows golfers how to aim at the flag
Once play could resume, two of the golfers managed a birdie at the hole

FOUR Richards Bay golfers will forever remember Monday’s round of golf as they came face-to-face with a hippo on the green.
After beginning their round in the late morning on the public holiday, Dr Frank van Niekerk, Buks van der Walt, Okkie Annandale and Danie Bosman’s game took a wild turn at the 11th hole.

‘It was about 1pm and, after teeing off on the 11th, we saw the hippo as we approached the green,’ said van Niekerk.
‘After seeing him, rather than approach the green as normal, we drove around the green.
‘It was a very close encounter and the hippo gave us a run for our money before eventually turning and walking away. But not after bumping and biting the flag!
‘We did what we could to give him his space and the noise that we made eventually saw him off.’
The green suffered some damage, thanks to the sheer weight of the hippo.
Despite the ordeal, both Buks van der Walt and Okkie Annandale managed a birdie at the par three hole.
The photographer of the event was happy to record a ‘no score’ on that particular hole.
