According to KwaMbonambi SAPS spokesperson Captain Nkosingiphile Mthethwa, the suspects were found at the scene with all necessary tools for illegal electrical connections in a bakkie.

TWO suspects, aged 34 and 38, were caught red-handed attempting to steal electricity at Nhlazini reserve outside KwaMbonambi last Sunday.

These included a toolbox, drill, hydraulic compressor, and crate with electric appliances, back cable and chain block, step ladder, two poles, electricity meter box and spade.

Mthethwa said both suspects were charged with the illegal connection of electricity.

‘Their bakkie and equipment were seized as exhibits, and they appeared at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Monday,’ she said.

‘They were remanded in police custody for further investigations and are expected to reappear at the same court next week for a formal bail application.’

Illegal electricity connections are rife across the region, with Eskom frequently carrying out checks and dismantling illegal connections.
