TECHNOLOGY whizz Alex Dodd from Felixton College recently participated in the ITWeb Cyber Security Hackathon, in the Northern Cape.
The Grade 10 pupil’s hard work saw him win the ‘Future Hackers Award for Developing AgriGuard’ after he took on roles as both a coder and project manager.
“The hackathon was an intense two-day event with non-stop coding, minimal sleep, and constant iteration on their projects,” he explained.
Preparing for the competition was no easy feat, involving hours of learning new methods to secure and improve the project while understanding the cost optimisation and complying with POPIA regulations.
With sights set on a future in tech, he had the opportunity to rub shoulders with industry giants like Dr James Stanger and Jamie Woodruff who taught Alex new tools and techniques to take his abilities to the next level.
Despite the various challenges along the way, his positive attitude and perseverance, together with guidance from mentors, enabled him to overcome obstacles and succeed.
He hopes to further develop AgriGuard, which is building a secure agricultural platform for farmers and potentially launching it with all the training and knowledge he has gathered throughout his journey.
Alex’s advice to others is to seize opportunities like the hackathon to gain experience and improve in the cybersecurity field, emphasising that persistence is key and that initial failures are part of the learning process.
