Charity begins at home

An alliance of organisations stands in solidarity to halt the R50-million donation to Cuba in efforts to curb hunger.

Deputy Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Alvin Botes announced that South Africa would be directing funds to the communist country.

The alliance is a coalition of NGOs, disaster response teams, food rescue and feeding schemes.

The government’s assistance is no surprise since Cuba and South Africa share a close relationship, with Cuba having played a significant role in the fight against apartheid.

The collective organisations said the funds needed to be redirected to finding solutions to rooting out the causes of hunger and poverty in our own country.

According to World Hunger Clock, 53% of South Africans face food insecurity, as opposed to only 19.98% of Cubans.

The army of organisations requested an urgent meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa and government officials.

Despite their efforts, these organisations’ need for assistance is more demanding today than ever.

South Africans who wish to join the relief coalition, can do so by signing the petition demanding government halt the donation to Cuba at https://bit.ly/3rGnaQd
