Huge waves nourished by gale force southerly winds pounded Alkantstrand on Sunday

While the Zululand coast escaped the disaster and mayhem further south in the country, once again there was noticeable beach and dune damage after Sunday’s storm surge.

Huge waves nourished by gale force southerly winds pounded Alkantstrand, once again breeching the vulnerable access point at the kiteboarding beach (Palm Beach) just to the north, with seawater pouring into the sand parking lot during the spring high tide late Sunday afternoon.

The scene attracted fewer onlookers than would normally be the case, owing to the Springbok-Romania rugby clash, but those who did go down were rewarded with a sighting that is becoming ever more frequent as there is little dune defence remaining.
