WATCH: Richards Bay residential fire concerns as woodchip blaze rages

Arboretum residents prepare for potential fire spread, while SPCA offers free lodging for pets in affected suburbs

THE Zululand Observer is on scene at Via Cassiandra in the Richards Bay suburb of Arboretum Extension after reports of a house on fire as the woodchip blaze rages on.

While some embers from the woodchip fire have landed in yards in nearby suburbs, there is no house fire.

Residents are flocking to the at-risk properties, carrying water in whatever containers they can, should the need arise, and as a preventative measure.

City of uMhlathuze firefighters have arrived on scene.

Richards Bay SPCA inspectors are also on scene, and have made lodgings available for the pets of residents living in the affected area.

In a statement issued this evening, the City of uMhlathuze said it is essential to underline that no hazardous chemicals are involved.
