Pongola horror crash truck driver denied bail

State proves case that driver is a flight risk

SIBUSISO Siyaya, the driver of the side-tipper coal truck that ploughed into a bakkie carrying 18 schoolchildren on the N2 in September, has been refused bail.

He appeared in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for a bail hearing.

Siyaya faces 20 charges of culpable homicide.

The court found that the State had proven its case that Siyaya was a flight risk and might abscond if released on bail.

The court further found that it was not in the interest of justice to grant him bail.

The matter was adjourned to 17 February for the Director of Public Prosecution’s decision and further investigations.
