KwaDlangezwa ‘trash for cash’ recycling project empowers locals

The aim is to empower unemployed residents

Kwadlangezwa residents are being empowered by a recycling project that turns litter into cash.

The community was introduced to the programme in December, and it is spearheaded by the Zululand Yacht Club in a joint venture with Litter4Tokens.

The aim is to empower unemployed residents to earn money and put food on the table for their families.
Through the project, residents pick up litter, which gets transported to local recycling initiative Africa’s Green Glass.

This programme has employed over 200 community members around King Cetshwayo District, with each earning no less than R1 450.

“It’s easy for people to just throw things out of their windows without realising the litter may danger animals and make our streets filthy.

“[The project] helps keep our streets clean, assists to decrease the high unemployment rate and empowers local recyclers who benefit from the litter they collect.

“The project has helped many people who have been battling financially owing to being unemployed, who are now earning a salary,” said Lindiwe Dube who assists in facilitating the programme.
