WATCH: City of uMhlathuze Speaker pays it forward to celebrate his birthday

School shoes donated to underprivileged children

To celebrate his birthday, City of uMhlathuze speaker Tobias Gumede donated 300 pairs of school shoes, as well as sanitary pads to pupils in all 34 municipal wards on Saturday.

Gumede said that growing up was not a smooth journey, and he understands how difficult it is not to have school shoes.

“Instead of celebrating this day with my family, I decided to do it differently by giving school shoes to learners knowing very well that ‘I am because you are’. I nearly did not complete school because I had no shoes,” said Gumede.

The former school principal further encouraged councillors and businesses to give back for the development of local communities.

“I call upon everyone to come forward and make a difference in the lives of the young people, as we have our trust in them to take forward the nation.”
