WATCH: City firefighters put out blaze at bus depot in Empangeni
It is alleged that the fire was started by an individual who was trying to smoke out a bee colony
Disaster was averted on Saturday afternoon when fast-acting City of uMhlathuze Fire & Rescue members tended to a blaze at a local bus depot.
Zululand Bus Service CEO Mduduzi Sithole was astonished when he heard that a heap of tyres at the depot burst into flames late Saturday afternoon.
It is alleged that the fire was started by an individual who was trying to smoke out a bee colony, and quickly got out of control.
The fire was first noticed by depot manager Anton van der Linde, who frantically alerted the fire department in Empangeni.
The black plumes of smoke were seen by Grantham Park residents.
“My initial thought was that it was the sugar cane burning. But that soon changed when the smell of burning tyres followed,” said one resident, Bianca Duvenhage.
The company’s CEO Mduduzi Sithole said, “I received a call from Anton informing me the fire department was on their way to our premises because there was a fire.”
“I am impressed with how quickly they responded to our call. They worked tirelessly to contain the flames. Owing to their diligence, there was no significant damage to our premises and the fire was quickly contained,” he explained.
