National Prosecuting Authority welcomes sentencing of man accused of raping a 15-year-old in Mahlabathini

A 34-year-old has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 15-year-old in Mahlabathini.

The sentence was handed down by the Ulundi Regional Court and welcomed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

“The accused and the complainant, who is mentally disabled, were known to each other as they were neighbours. The accused raped the complainant on two occasions, in March 2021 and October 2022.

“He threatened to kill her family if she reported the matter.

“Following the second incident, the complainant reported the matter to her schoolteacher.

“She was subsequently taken to a local clinic, and the police were alerted, leading to the accused’s arrest,” said NPA regional spokesperson for KZN Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.

Ramkisson-Kara said during the trial, Prosecutor Khethiwe Buthelezi led the evidence of the complainant, her grandmother and the doctor who examined the complainant.

“In her statement, the complainant described the detrimental impact the incidents have had on her life. She said she struggles to sleep at night and is angry all the time,” Ramkisson-Kara stated.

“The accused was sentenced to an effective term of life imprisonment.

“He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm, and the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.”
