Dolphin pod spotted in Richards Bay following military activity

There have been daily sightings during the entire month of March

Concerned that the recent military manoeuvres – and especially the canon firing – at Alkantstrand might have detrimentally affected the local dolphin population, researchers are pleased to report that all appears well.

“We were extremely pleased to see a pod off the beach the very next day and in fact there have been daily sightings during the entire month of March,” said local citizen scientist and dolphin ambassador, Dave Savides.

‘Dolphin Dave’ has been involved in the endangered humpback dolphin research project, run by Wits University, for the past two decades and after just having enjoyed two weeks’ leave, spent countless hours at the viewing platform at the end of the pier.

“With holidays coming up it’s a great time for families to be outdoors and the chances of seeing these beautiful creatures is especially good in the early hours, between sunrise and
mid-morning.

“But they can pop up at any time.”
