Coffee or tea? What your morning beverage reveals about you
Tea drinkers are night owls while coffee drinkers enjoy listening to classical music. Read on for the full survey results
One of the first things many South Africans do in the morning is make a cup of tea or coffee (load-shedding permitting) – but have you ever wondered why you choose one over the other?
Studies have shown that your morning beverage says a lot about you.
In America, researchers have analysed more than 2 000 different personalities and connected this with the morning choice of beverage. Here are the findings…
Coffee drinkers
The research shows that people who prefer a morning cup of coffee are more introverted, but also more creative thinkers.
Coffee drinkers usually have their first cup around 8am to prepare them for the day, and it’s usually enjoyed on the go as they tackle the morning traffic and school drop-offs.
When asked why each prefers their desired beverage, 41% of coffee drinkers say they rely on caffeine to pump them up and get them going for the day.
When it comes to TV preferences, coffee drinkers tend to watch shows like Seinfield, The Office, and Grey’s Anatomy.
In terms of music, coffee drinkers generally prefer jazz, blues, punk and rock.Research also shows coffee drinkers are light sleepers as opposed to their tea-drinking counterparts.
Tea drinkers
Tea drinkers, on the other hand, are more extroverted, enjoy social interaction and are always up for an adventure.
When it comes to TV shows, tea drinkers are likely to turn on Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and The Walking Dead before listening to some classical, hip hop, rap, or even country music. Tea drinkers are usually night owls, according to the survey.
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council, says most teas contain less caffeine than coffee, promoting better sleep.
“Caffeine is a stimulant that keeps you awake, so it is best to limit these beverages to the morning. With Rooibos tea, the more you drink it the better your sleep will be,” she said.
