‘Near pandemic’ level of poison-resistant roaches

Zululanders are commenting that these roaches are almost impossible to kill

There appears to be a growing infestation of so-called ‘permanent resident’ cockroaches, with many residents concerned they have evolved to survive poison and traps.

According to a statement from CropLife SA, South Africa is dealing with a ‘near pandemic’ cockroach outbreak, shifting from predominantly night-time activity to daytime as well.

Zululanders are commenting that these roaches are almost impossible to kill, with one saying, “I had sprayed an entire can of Doom and, to my shock, the next morning I found the cockroach still twitching and looking very much alive!”

Another resident claimed he had caught a cockroach with a tissue and flushed it down the toilet. However, the cockroach came crawling right back up.

A spokesperson from Zululand Pest Control explained:

“There are two main reasons there is an infestation of roaches; hot and humid weather conditions, and unhygienic living conditions where waste has not been removed for days.

“This attracts them and becomes a breeding ground for these roaches.”

So what is the solution to deal with the growing cockroach problem?

• Ensure the dark areas behind fridges, washing machines and stoves are disinfected often
• Clean up food spills immediately
• Remove waste daily while keeping refuse areas clean.
