‘Stop vandalising water infrastructure’, says DWS

Citizens urged to use water sparingly, and report leaks and vandalism to the department

KZN water levels remain stable amid the current winter season, with the province’s storage capacity recording 90.9% from last week’s 91.1%.

This is according to a recent report issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

DWS spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said the main water supply system, Umgeni, which supplies water to five dams in the province, has recorded a minimal decrease, from 98.0% in the previous week to 97.5% this week.

Locally, Hluhluwe dam dipped slightly from 100.3% to 99.9%; Goedertrouw remained the same at 100.2%, while Klipfontein decreased ever so slightly from 100.0% to 99.8% and Pongolapoort remained level at 85.7%.

Despite the stable water levels, the department issued a warning.

“Residents are called to continue using water sparingly; refrain from vandalising water infrastructure, and fix and report water leaks to local authorities while the department continues to work collaboratively with the provincial and local governments to ensure water security in the province,” said Mavasa.
