Call for minimum wage adjustment inputs

Businesses, employees and other stakeholders have until 4 September to share their views on the 2027 National Minimum Wage

The deadline looms for the public to submit input on possible adjustments to the national minimum wage (NMW) for next year.

This could lead to possible wage increases in several sectors, including farmworkers and domestic workers.

The minimum wage is currently set at R30.23 for each ordinary hour of work.

Businesses, employees and other stakeholders have until 4 September to share their views on the 2027 adjustments.

The Department of Employment and Labour said the public process aims to ‘improve the wages of the lowest-paid workers while protecting them from unreasonably low wages’.

“Participants may complete the online survey, submit a formal written submission, or do both.

“The survey is available on the Department of Employment and Labour website, at www.labour.gov.za, and Facebook page.

Formal written submissions can be emailed to NMWreview@labour.gov.za,” said department spokesperson Teboho Thejane.

“Public participation is an important part of ensuring the national minimum wage continues to support both workers and businesses while contributing to sustainable economic growth and social justice,” said Thejane.

The National Minimum Wage Act first came into effect in 2019 and is reviewed annually. Employers are obligated to pay workers the stipulated minimum amount per hour.

Labour and Employment Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has warned that no employee must be paid below the NMW.

“It cannot be varied by contract, collective agreement or law; and it is also an unfair labour practice for an employer to unilaterally alter hours of work or other conditions of employment in implementing the NMW,” said Meth.
