Government to build wall to tackle cross-border crime

An 8km wall will be constructed to deal with cross-border crimes plaguing uMkhanyakude District

KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has announced that an 8km wall will be constructed to deal with cross-border crimes plaguing uMkhanyakude District.

This she announced on Monday when she led a government delegation to unveil bold interventions to drastically reduce the scourge of crime, specifically cross-border crime, during an imbizo.

The delegation included Police Minister Bheki Cele, provincial law enforcement heads and community crime-fighting structures, and was held at Thengani area in uMhlabuyalingana Municipality.

This imbizo was part of the government’s plan to heighten crime combating and prevention plans in uMkhanyakude District, which has been hard-hit by cross-border crime, especially carjackings.

Interventions such as the deployment of specialised police units in the district and along the border were unpacked, as well as improvements to local police stations.

The premier highlighted partnerships with the private sector, which will see the introduction of technological advances and solutions in the fight against crime.

Interventions announced by Dube-Ncube were welcomed by locals, including the 8km wall that is intended to deal with the issue of the sale of stolen vehicles across the border.

The premier also introduced to the public the contractor appointed to construct the wall.

Cele said since the introduction of a specialised unit in the area, there have been numerous arrests made and more may be expected.

He said Manguzi police station will get the necessary infrastructure so it functions accordingly.

uMkhanyakude Mayor Siphile Mdaka applauded the government for these interventions.
