Fill up before midnight’s fuel increase

The Department of Energy confirmed on Monday that petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin will rise at midnight

Motorists should expect to pay 37 cents more for a litre of petrol as of midnight tonight (Tuesday).

The Department of Energy confirmed on Monday that both grades of petrol (93 and 95) would hike by 37 cents per litre, while diesel is set to go up by 72 cents per litre.

Illuminating paraffin is set for a 71 cent per litre increase.

The department has cited increasing demand for crude oil from China and India, and tightening supply owing to continued production cuts by Saudi Arabia as the main contributing factors to the increases.

“The average international product prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin followed the increasing trend of crude oil prices during the period under review,” said the department.

These led to higher contributions to the basic fuel prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 63.59 c/l, 99.09. c/l and 98.71c/l respectively.

“However, LPG has decreased owing to lower prices of propane and butane.”
