Tertiary tension continues

Classes are suspended at the University of Zululand (Unizulu)

In-person education remains interrupted with some programmes cancelled and gates closed at certain campuses following violent student protests.

Classes are suspended at the University of Zululand (Unizulu), while uMfolozi TVET College students at eShowe returned to campus on Thursday.

At Unizulu, certain departments will go online after protests erupted around NFSAS payment issues, prompting campus closure almost two weeks ago.

Nursing science students will resume their studies online, while engineering students will be issued with special permits to access the Richards Bay city campus.

Science students can access campus for time-sensitive practicals and experiments, while postgraduate students will only have access after campus has fully reopened.

“Students who face technical difficulties during online learning will be assisted. The challenges posed by technology are understood, and the university will work to ensure that another opportunity is created to complete assessments where needed,” reads a statement from the university management.

Students have returned to eShowe TVET campus after a protest regarding food and water concerns.

During the protest, students came face-to-face with police with some arrested and released later without being charged.
