Security guards avert robberies

In one incident, suspects smashed a window and then climbed through to gain access to the facility

The swift action of alert and diligent security guards in two separate incidents last week foiled robberies at a public library and pre-primary school in Mtubatuba.

In one incident, suspects smashed a window at the KwaMsane Public Library, which they then climbed through to gain access to the facility.

The response of the on-duty security guard disturbed the suspects, who fled the scene empty-handed.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize confirmed that the matter was reported at KwaMsane police station and that it is being investigated.

“No goods were stolen, the suspects were interrupted by the quick response of the security guard and left the computers on the floor and ran off,” said Mkhize.

It is believed that one of the suspects cut themselves on the broken window pane as there was blood at the scene.

In a separate incident earlier last week, the prompt response of a local security company thwarted the attempts of suspects who, in the wee hours of
21 August, sought to break in at a pre-primary school in Riverview, outside Mtubatuba.

Mkhize said no suspects have been arrested in this incident either.

“The suspects did not get inside, they were disturbed by security guards,” said Mkhize.

According to reports, the attempted break-in occurred at 2.50am, with three suspects spotted during the incident.

Residents commenting in a community WhatsApp group said the suspects fired shots at the security guard who had responded to an alert signal.

It was further said on the group that the responding security guard had retrieved a bicycle, allegedly stolen by the suspects from one of the Riverview Village households.

The bike was dumped as they fled towards the neighbouring Kwa-D (Ndlovu Village).
