Icy conditions for KZN as cold front hits South Africa

While Zululanders will not expect snow, rain is expected today and into tomorrow

ZULULANDERS can expect some icy, wet conditions in the coming days as two major cold fronts hit South Africa.

The first cold front hit the Western Cape on Sunday, and by Monday morning, much snow had fallen in places like Sutherland, Matroosberg and Ceres.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) on Sunday issued a weather warning for KZN, as a cold front is expected to pass through the province today (Monday).

The warning is in place from 7pm today (Monday) to midnight tomorrow.

“Freezing levels will be dropping quite significantly, resulting in snowfall over the southern Drakensberg on Monday evening into Tuesday early morning,” said SAWS.

Potential impacts include isolated loss of vulnerable livestock and crops, possible closure of Sani Pass for a short period, and difficult driving conditions owing to icy and slippery roads.

While Zululanders will not expect snow, rain is expected today and into tomorrow.

Tuesday’s temperature is set to be the lowest of the week, reaching a high of just 16 degrees Celsius in Richards Bay and Empangeni, 15 in Hluhluwe, a bitterly cold 12 in eShowe, and 16 in Mtubatuba.

Wrap up warm, be vigilant when driving on wet roads and remember to increase following distance, switch on headlights and reduce speed.

According to Accuweather, the cold spell will be shortlived, with conditions improving from Wednesday.
