WATCH: Sea claims cars in Cape Town high tides

New moon spring high tide coupled with gale force winds wreak havoc along coastline

THE National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has again urged anglers, bathers and boaters to exercise extreme caution amid new moon spring high tides this weekend and into the new week.

This after a number of vehicles were washed into the sea during a spring high tide in Gordon’s Bay in the Western Cape at around 3.30pm today (Saturday).

“Spring tides cause higher-than-normal high tides and lower-than-normal low tides. This, coupled with gale force winds and high seas we are experiencing around the coast, we appeal to the public to be cautious,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

“High tide will peak over the next few days around 4.30am, getting gradually later each day, and at around 5pm in the afternoon, also getting gradually later each day.”

While the SA Weather Service (SAWS) level 5 wind warning for parts of KZN issued on Friday did not include the Zululand coastline, local forecasters say 8m swells are predicted for the Richards Bay coastline tomorrow (Sunday), with spring high tides Monday to Wednesday.
