Security beefed up in Richards Bay CBD after mass shooting

SAPS appeals to anyone who may have information on the crime, to report it

A HIGH police presence was seen in Richards Bay on Wednesday morning as specialised law enforcement units and security companies patrolled the Bay Centre area following a mass shooting which left four dead and one hospitalised the previous day.

Heavily armed police officers combed the area and the mass contingent swept through the parking lots around the CBD, patrolling and removing car washers in the vicinity.

Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Debbie Ferreira confirmed that police were on high alert and measures were in place for added visibility.

“We appeal to members of the public to be safe when in public places, and in the event of a crime, to rather move away from the scene than flock to it,” she said.

“Often, when a crime is committed, people rush to the scene, which could pose a threat as citizens could be putting their lives in danger.

“For their safety, we advise citizens to refrain from taking crime scene photos and circulating them, especially when it is highly sensitive or graphic in nature.”

She said if anyone has information relating to Tuesday’s incident, they are asked to report it to the police on 083 7784175.
