NFP calls for Nongoma curfew after murder
Zulu was attacked and killed by four gunmen at his homestead
The family of slain Nongoma farmer Bongani Zulu want to know the motive for their father’s murder.
Zulu was attacked and killed by four gunmen at his homestead in the Buxeden area outside Nongoma on Friday night.
It is believed the gunmen were looking for his wife, NFP PR Councillor Senzeni Zulu.
Zulu’s daughter, Balungile (41) said the family needs closure.
“When they arrived at the house, they demanded to see my mother, who was not at home. They forced my father to open all the rooms and after that, they shot him in the neck,” she said.
“The only thing we want from them is to know why they killed my father. We want to know who sent them to do this. We know NFP leaders in Nongoma are being attacked, but we do not know who is attacking and killing them.
“We are happy they were arrested on the same day, and we believe they will tell us the truth,” said Balungile.
She added that her mother has accepted that her husband is gone, but they are not leaving their home because of this tragedy.
“If they want to return and wipe out my entire family, they are welcome to do so, but we won’t leave our home because of them,” said Balungile.
Four suspects were arrested by Nongoma SAPS shortly after the shooting and the murder docket was transferred to the Political Killing Task Team.
The four face conspiracy to commit murder, murder, attempted murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
They appeared at Nongoma Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were remanded in police custody pending investigations.
NFP Secretary-General Canaan Mdletshe said since July, NFP councillors in Nongoma have been mercilessly attacked and killed.
“Our councillors have been under serious attacks, and we are calling on the national government to consider imposing a curfew in Nongoma. The surge in attacks on councillors in the area has instilled fear not only among councillors, but also the general public,” he said.
