Cause of Richards Bay woodchip fire still under investigation

Video footage categorically proves where the fire began, says NCT

The devastating fire that broke out at the NCT Mill woodchip mounds a fortnight ago, did not originate from the conveyor system.

“While the source of the fire has yet to be determined, video footage categorically proves that the blaze began on the woodchip pile itself, and did not start on the conveyor,” NCT Managing Director Danny Knoesen said on Monday.

Within minutes, fanned by gale-force winds, the blaze was out of control and over the next few days would consume the entire woodchip stockpile.
