Safety features on new KZN number plate system questioned

MEC urged to consider the financial impact and potential for crime

The IFP is calling on Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka to consider the financial impact and potential for crime when shifting to the ZN number plate system on 1 December.

IFP Chief Whip in the KZN Legislature Blessed Gwala said they are concerned with how the department handled the consultation process.

“The department said it would issue a Gazette for public comment. We believe this is merely to rubber-stamp the process,” said Gwala.

“It is apparent that the department has already decided to implement this new number plate system without considering people’s concerns or the financial implication this change might have for car owners.”
