WATCH: Protesters block Home Affairs office with coffins

Home Affairs staff are locked outside as the protesters have used their own locks to prevent them from entering

Empty coffins have been placed outside the Department of Home Affairs offices in Mtubatuba as part of protest action by local funeral parlours.

Home Affairs staff are locked outside as the protesters have used their own locks to prevent them from entering the premises.

While there has been no acts of violence or intimidation by the protesters, two police officers are on scene to monitor the situation.

The funeral palrlours are reportedly demanding ‘designation letters’, which they claim were supposed to be issued since 2017, permitting them to operate, mainly to obtain death certificates on behalf of their clients.

The protesters say they have, up until about three weeks ago, been able to operate until they were told they could no longer obtain the death certificates without these designation letters, an instruction they claim came from the district manager of Home Affairs.

This is a developing story and we will keep you abreast of further updates.
