Community members disarmed the 40-year-old man

Community members from kwaShikishela near Mtubatuba subdued and disarmed a 40-year-old man on Saturday after he allegedly shot a resident.

uMkhanyakude District SAPS spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize said police arrived to find the suspect had sustained injuries.

“The police attended the incident and found the suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspect had a conflict with the victim, which led to him drawing a firearm and shooting the victim,” said Mkhize.

“The victim was assisted by community members and the suspect was disarmed. Both the suspect and the victim were taken to the clinic for medical attention. The suspect was then arrested and charged with attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.”

Once discharged from hospital, Mkhize said the alleged shooter would appear before court.

Acting uMkhanyakude District SAPS commissioner Brigadier Mandla Mhlongo expressed his appreciation to the community for assisting the police.
