Zululand welcomes general surgeon, Dr Siyabonga Masondo
Surgibay Specialist Surgeons Medical Practice in Richards Bay welcomes its newest partner, Dr Siyabonga NelsonJunior Masondo
Dr Masongo joins drs G Kelling, CS Lacey, PLS Van Rooyen, BF Melonas and SM Smit at Surgibay, situated at Netcare The Bay Hospital.
Specialist surgeon Dr Masondo is a proud Zululander, born and raised in Ngwelezane and educated at Empangeni High School. He has returned home to serve the community that raised him.
He is a well-respected figure in northern KZN, having spent several years serving the community as a general practitioner before pursuing further specialisation and qualifying as a specialist surgeon.
Dr Masondo obtained his MBChB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2013. He completed his internship at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, followed by community service at Nseleni Community Health Centre.
He spent three years performing surgery at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital, gaining broad hands-on experience in a high-volume setting.
In 2021 he joined the Surgery Registrar Programme at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, and in 2025 he qualified as a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa, FCS(SA). He also holds an MMed in Surgery with Cum Laude from the University of Pretoria (2026).
Dr Masondo is committed to delivering safe and compassionate surgical care to the people of Richards Bay, Empangeni and surrounding communities. His areas of interest include minimal invasive surgery, acute critical care and hernia surgery.
Dr Masongo’s extensive experience, dedication to patient care, and established connection with the local community make him a valuable addition to the Surgibay team.
