Big cobra captured at Richards Bay resort

A security guard spotted the snake under the office building at a self-catering lodge in Meerensee

Bay snake catcher Peter ‘Daring’ Daniel certainly can see the forest (cobra) for the trees.

Duty called again on Thursday afternoon after a security guard spotted a big snake slithering under the office building at a self-catering lodge in Meerensee.

“The catch took some time because the office is raised about 20cm off the ground on bricks.

“My wife Janine and son Nathan were with me, and I had them watch the sides in case it sneaked out while I removed wood from underneath,” said Peter.

The catch was a little risky, as from where Peter was bent he could see it and got the grabbing tongs on it, but he wasn’t sure exactly where he had gripped it.

“It was a bit of a blind grab but all went well and the 1.9m male forest cobra was bagged and will be taken to Hluhluwe Snake Pharm where we will weigh it.

“According to the weight of snake, we will draw some blood, which will be used for making antivenom. The snake will then be released at Bonamanzi,” said Peter.
