Pinch those pennies this ‘Dezemba’

7 tips to avoid 'Januworry'

It is no secret the South African economy has taken blow after blow, leaving citizens cash-strapped.

With ‘Ke Dezemba’ on our doorstep, many fortunate people will receive their much-anticipated bonus or coveted thirteenth cheque.

While this can provide financial and stress relief, it needs to be spent wisely.

Here are some penny-pinching tips to exercise this December:

• Start by making a realistic budget that includes savings
• Plan your outings. Spontaneity is great, but it can come at a cost. Opt to have fun at home
• Always make a list of the grocery and household items you need before you go shopping
• Limit alcohol consumption as it can lead to impulsive purchases and poor financial decisions – not to mention the cost of buying alcohol in the first place
• Cook one delicious meal for Christmas lunch instead of a buffet
• Make fun gifts at home
• Buy in bulk, it helps alleviate the ‘Januworry’ stress.
