Storm warning for Zululand region

Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected across KZN

Parts of Zululand can expect severe thunderstorms this (Friday) afternoon, evening and into Saturday, with the possibility of strong, damaging winds and heavy downpours.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) earlier today issued a level 2 yellow warning for severe thunderstorms, in place from 1pm today until 11pm tomorrow.

While the unstable weather will begin predominantly in KZN’s northern interior and Midlands, it is expected to drift north-eastwards.

Areas to be affected include Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mthonjaneni, Nkandla, Nongoma, Ulundi, uMhlabuyalingana and Pongola.

“Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected across KZN today,” said SAWS.

“These storms are expected to be accompanied by possible strong, damaging winds, hail, heavy downpours and severe lightning, which may result in minor localised impacts.”

The weather service said possible impacts include localised damage to infrastructure, settlements and vehicles on wet roads; localised fire due to lightning, and localised flooding.

Motorists are reminded to switch on headlights, reduce speed and increase following distance.
