A blended family Christmas

Zululand polygamist Sphelele ‘Sbhebhelezi’ Shabalala and his family

Many families celebrate Christmas with their loved ones, and it’s nothing different in the polygamous family – it’s all about love, family and sharing.

Zululand polygamist Sphelele ‘Sbhebhelezi’ Shabalala opened a window and let us in on his blended family Christmas celebration.

“Christmas is all about being with your family, siblings and other relatives. We eat, sing, and share stories just like any other family does,” he explained.

With three wives and homes, Shabalala said every year, the celebration is held at a different house.

“We alternate but we are always together. Polygamy means growing the clan, so it wouldn’t make sense to celebrate separately,” he explained.

The Shabalala family starts with sharing love with the community where they donate party packs to hundreds of residents.

After their community work, they feast, and the wives work together to prepare delicious meals and create a good environment for their guests, children and relatives.

“During the holidays, we deal with different personalities and the challenges of a big family, but being united always sees us through. We go through the same things as any other family, it’s just that ours is a little bit bigger,” he explained.
