Region readies for Bheki Cele visit

More than 140 suspects linked to cross-border vehicle theft syndicates in the area have been arrested

Police Minister Bheki Cele is today (Thursday) expected to visit uMkhanyakude District.

Cele will be accompanied by his deputy, Cassel Mathale as well as the national commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola.

The ministry of police will visit the district to assess the SAPS’ festive season operations.

This includes the SAPS task team to clamp down on cross-border crime, which has been deployed to the area since February following incidents of cross-border vehicle theft where stolen and hijacked vehicles were being smuggled into Mozambique from South Africa.

Thus far, more than 140 suspects linked to cross-border vehicle theft syndicates in the area have been arrested and more than 64 vehicles recovered.

Firearms and rifles, as well as ammunition used in the commission of some of these crimes in the area have also been recovered during operations.
