Richards Bay back-to-school drive needs backing

This year there are over 240 underprivileged children in need of essential school gear

With just a week to go before schools reopen, Richards Bay charity organisation Walk in Faith is calling on businesses and community members to assist with their stationery and lunch drives for local primary and high school learners.

Founder Merinda Ackermann said the need is rising on an annual basis and this year there are over 240 underprivileged children in need of essential school gear.

Over the years, the organisation has met its targets thanks to the support of generous and regular donors.
They are now asking for support to ensure each learner has all the essentials they need for their first day of school.

“We are still in need of whiteboards and markers, calculators, colour pens, school bags, glue, mathematic sets, and book covers and plastic ,” said Ackerman.

“For those who would like to make a financial contribution, pre-school and primary is R400 per learner, while high school is R700 per child. The weekly cost per child for school lunches is R150.

”We are inviting donors who would like to pledge their support for any of our programmes, especially the learners’ lunch meals which runs throughout the year.

”Pupils rely on these meals as many of them come from homes where their parents are unemployed or earning a very low income and cannot afford groceries,” she said.

New and pre-loved school items in good condition are also welcome, as are school shoes, backpacks and any other items.
