Assault suspect arrested for illegal weapons possession

He was remanded in custody until a formal bail application

A Hlabisa man who was allegedly involved in a fight was last week arrested for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Police spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize said Scelo Mabanga (42) was arrested at the Macekeni area on 4 January.

Police received a tip-off about two people, one of whom was Mabanga, who were fighting at Mpelenyana area in Hlabisa.

“One of them was in possession of unlicensed firearms. Police responded swiftly and upon arrival at the area, a pistol, a rifle, and six rounds of ammunition were recovered.

“The suspect was immediately traced and arrested. He was charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as for assault GBH,” said Mkhize.

He said Mabanga appeared before the Hlabisa Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 5 January, and was remanded in custody until today (Tuesday, 9 January) for a formal bail application.
