According to recent news headlines, many South Africans are opting to return after years of living abroad.
Contrary to the old adage, the grass is not always greener on the other side, with many pinning their return on issues such as the high cost of living, weather, natural disasters, and even threats of war.
Yes, South Africa has challenges such as load-shedding, among others, but there is no place like home.
Many say living overseas is more than what meets the eye, and urge people to not be fooled by social media, which shows only the parts of people’s lives they are willing to share.
And, while the cost of living may be spiralling in an ever-increasing upward trend in South Africa, it is a global phenomenon, not limited to the Rainbow Nation.
Moreover, economic and political turmoil are also not limited to Mzansi, with both the UK and USA preparing for general elections later this year, and all the uncertainty and angst that goes with it.
Many returning South Africans have also cited the Covid pandemic as their reason for coming back home – their mantra is to spend time with loved ones as you never know how long you have with them.
