Powerless Mtubatuba community threatens to block N2

Seven months, and two for another section of the ward, without electricity...

Frustrated community members from Ward 7 in Mtubatuba on Monday picketed outside the local Eskom office to demand an immediate resolution to their plight.

Seven months, and two for another section of the ward, without electricity is what sparked the charged picket, with some residents accusing Eskom of unfairness.

These community members have threatened to block the N2 in protest if their electricity issue is not swiftly resolved.

One resident, who is also a member of the local Induna’s council, Thokozani Gumede, alleged that Eskom had sent out SMSes to some customers in the area in which they stated the issue of the two failed transformers had been resolved.

However, the alleged SMSes turned out to be untrue, added Gumede.

Gumede further claimed that Eskom officials had advised residents to purchase their own transformers.

This claim is at odds with Eskom’s response to a media inquiry on the matter in which the power utility said it advised residents with illegal connections to pay fines before the transformers would be replaced.
