The the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in King Cetshwayo District is forging ahead with preparations to ensure free and fair elections, after President Cyril Ramaphosa last week proclaimed 29 May as the date for the upcoming general elections.

Chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo said the first major implication was that the voters’ roll has now closed, meaning no further voter registration may take place, either at a local office or online.

King Cetshwayo IEC regional manager Stella Dlamini said they are well under way with preparations.

“For us, right now is to engage with the local political parties with regards to the timetable, and continue with programmes for free and fair elections,” said Dlamini.

“We are in full swing with community outreach programmes such as balloting education from now until May, and are engaging with all relevant departments and stakeholders, including Amakhosi, to ensure information about the IEC is communicated,” she said.
