Mineworkers’ union rallies local support
Union claims Richards Bay workers will support its party in upcoming elections

PRESSURE will be exerted on mining companies to hire local employees in the areas in which they operate.
This was revealed by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) president Joseph Mathunjwa at a meeting in Richards Bay on Saturday.

The meeting, attended by union members, sought to address issues faced by employees and job seekers in the region.
Mathunjwa added that the union is contesting the 2024 general elections through its newly formed Labour Party SA.

“This is not just a political party, it stands for South African citizens and workers in particular,” said Mathunjwa.
“We are concerned about the future of our children and where [we stand] in this current South Africa, which is leaderless.”
He said there is no accountability or control over who enters or leaves the country’s borders.
“There is no country in the world that can continue the way South Africa is being led. Any illegal foreigner is likely to be richer than a native of this country,” he said.
Amcu’s KZN Coastal Region chairperson, Mahlobohlobo Mkhwanazi confirmed workers in Richards Bay will be backing the union’s Labour Party SA in the upcoming elections.
