Richards Bay endurance athlete runs for change

Career woman, social activist and endurance athlete Nontuthuko 'Nontu' Mgabhi exceeds her target

Zululand’s very own Superwoman is back at it and has just completed the gruelling 520km The Track Namibia ultra running event.

Merging her love of social activism with her passion for outdoor adventure, Nontuthuko ‘Nontu’ Mgabhi once again did it not only for the love of running, but to further raise awareness of the plight of Zululand’s underprivileged schoolchildren.

“The target was to raise 520 pairs of shoes, and I am glad to report that I have exceeded this target,” said a proud Nontu.

“I feel privileged that I can push my limits. The Track was hard as a track can be expected; 520km over 9 stages requires a consistently strong body, mind and spirit because yes, The Track will test you,” she said, reflecting on her time in Namibia.

Despite her commitment to her cause and athleticism, like so many she experienced challenges along the way.

“The hardest part for me other than the distance was carrying a backpack weighing approximately 14kg containing all the food I needed for the 10 days, personal equipment like a sleeping bag and mattress, and all the compulsory equipment necessary to survive in a desert.”

“Thanks to individuals and organisations who donated shoes, four primary schools are the recipients, and these schools were selected based on need as many children in deep rural areas and townships walk a long distance to school yet cannot afford shoes that can take on those miles.”
