Theft suspects outrun police

Two suspects believed to have been involved in vehicle theft and cross-border crime evaded arrest by running into the bushes.

Members of the Economic Infrastructure and Cybercrime Threats (EITT) team in King Cetshwayo, together with officials from two tracking companies, Mtunzini CPF and private security company representatives were on duty when they received a tip-off about two stolen vehicles that were being taken to Mozambique on Monday.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said their members followed the information and drove to Hluhluwe.

“While waiting in Hluhluwe, they spotted two vehicles fitting the description provided to them,” he said.

“They followed the first vehicle which was a Toyota Hilux Legend 50. When the driver of this vehicle realised the police were tailing him, he opened fire towards the police.

“Members retaliated and the suspect stopped the vehicle, jumped out and ran into the bushes, managing to outrun the police.

“They tried to track him but couldn’t find him.

“The police went back to wait in the same spot for the second vehicle. As they were standing there, they noticed a Toyota Fortuna approaching.

“When they flagged down the driver, he stopped the vehicle and also ran away,” said Shangase.

Shangase added that preliminary investigations revealed one of the vehicles was reported stolen at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria, while the second vehicle was reported stolen at the Krugersdorp SAPS in Gauteng.

“Both vehicles were taken to Hluhluwe SAPS and no suspects were arrested,” said Shangase.
