Richards Bay businessman arrested after copper theft

Suspects nabbed during an operation that uncovered stolen property, reportedly taken from a Transnet depot

A business owner (48) in Mandlazini was arrested for possession of stolen property worth thousands last Friday after a police raid.

The police’s Economic Infrastructure Task Team received a tip-off about stolen property valued at just under R170 000, reportedly taken from a Transnet depot recently.

King Cetshwayo Police cluster spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said when their team arrived at the business property, they could not immediately locate the stolen goods.

“They were hidden in an outside storeroom. The suspect buys and sells scrap in his yard,” said Shangase.

“Another suspect, aged 30, was also arrested and charged with theft of copper cables, which occurred last Wednesday at the Transnet depot. Both suspects are expected to appear at the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court soon.”
